Pachira Mini (Pachira Aquatica)

Plant Bio

If you saw a money tree, or Pachira Aquatica, in its native habitat of Central and South American swamps, you probably wouldn’t recognize it. The tree can grow up to 60 feet tall (versus a max of 3 to 6 feet indoors), and that ubiquitous braided trunk isn’t a natural feature. When grown in a nursery, the supple young, green trunks are slowly braided by cultivators before they harden and turn woody. Money tree plants often have their slender trunks braided together and are a low maintenance option for artificially lit areas. Money tree plant care is easy and based upon just a few specific conditions.

These plants like a moderately humid room and deep but infrequent watering. Water the plants until the water runs from the drainage holes and then let them dry out between watering. If your home is on the dry side, you can increase the humidity by placing the pot on a saucer filled with pebbles. Keep the saucer filled with water and the evaporation will enhance the humidity of the area. Remember to fertilize every two weeks as part of good money tree plant care. Use a liquid plant food diluted by half. Suspend fertilizing in winter. The Pachira plant rarely needs to be pruned but as part of your annual money tree plant care, take off any damaged or dead plant material.

Aglaonema Silver Queen (Aglaonema)

Plant Bio

One of the most common indoor house plants and office plants is the Aglaonema ‘Maria’ or, as it is more commonly called, the Chinese Evergreen plant. Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen’ is easy to care for and is great for use in an office or home environment. Aglaonema ‘Silver Queen’ is tolerant of lower light levels often found in the home or office. This tropical foliage plant is one of the most durable houseplants you can grow, tolerating poor light, dry air and drought.

Although they are tolerant of many growing conditions, following certain recommendations will yield greater results. This includes placing them in well-draining soil, preferably an equal mix of potting soil, perlite and sand. Chinese evergreen plants thrive in medium to low light conditions or indirect sunlight. They enjoy moderate watering—not too much, not too little. Allow the plant to dry out some between watering. Overwatering will lead to root rot. Older plants will sometimes produce flowers reminiscent of calla or peace lilies.

Creeping Fig Mini (Ficus Pumila)

Plant Bio

The key to a healthy creeping fig plant is to provide as much warm, humid air as possible, plenty of even moisture, and bright (but not direct) sunlight. However, it’s worth noting that even very healthy and well-cared-for plants will likely only last a few years in their pots; ultimately their root structures are designed for aggressive and spreading growth, and it’s highly unlikely your indoor plant will ever bloom or yield fruit.

If you want to keep your creeping fig plant around for longer than its natural indoor life, propagate the plant every other year or so. That way, when one plant declines, a new one will be waiting to take its spot.

Keep in mind, if growing your creeping fig outdoors, it can become invasive quickly. If you choose to plant it in your garden, know that you will have to prune creeping fig consistently to ensure it doesn’t take over nearby plants.

Light

Creeping fig plants prefer a bright spot in your home but do not like direct sunlight. In general, you should aim to give your plant six to eight hours of diffused, indirect light each day. They can also survive in low-light conditions for a bit of time, but will definitely grow more slowly and potentially drop some of their leaves.

Soil

Creeping fig plants can grow in myriad soil types, so long as they’re well-draining. Typically, you can opt for any store-bought, soil-based potting mix. To aid in drainage and prevent root rot, opt to plant your creeping fig in a pot that boasts ample drainage holes at its base.

Water

Keep your plant steadily moist, but don’t allow it to sit in water. The soil should be allowed to dry out before watering again. Generally, you should water your creeping fig regularly (about once a week) during its growing season, but tapper off your cadence come fall and winter. If you notice the plant’s leaves browning or dropping from the plant, it’s probably getting too much water.

Temperature and Humidity

True to its tropical roots, creeping fig prefers a warm, moist environment. Temperatures indoors should be kept around 65 degrees Fahrenheit to 85 degrees Fahrenheit, and never allowed to dip below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The plant prefers above-average humidity levels as well, so consider keeping it in an already-humid part of your home (like a kitchen or bathroom), or invest in a space humidifier.

Fertilizer

While creeping fig doesn’t need to be fertilized in order to thrive, you can feed it to help with its growth rate. If you choose to feed your plant, opt for a weak liquid fertilizer and feed once a month throughout the spring, summer, and fall, decreasing to every other month in the winter.

Golden Pothos Hanging (Pothos)

Plant Bio

Golden Pothos (Scindapsus aureus) plants are among the most popular houseplants for their versatility and easy care. Golden Pothos have a yellow and green variegation which make them easily recognizable and popular in a variety of settings. Also known as Devil’s Ivy, Golden Pothos is naturally found in forests from Southeast Asia to the West Pacific. Typically a fast-growing strong climber, Golden Pothos can flourish as houseplants or climbers, indoor and outdoor, in full sun or partial shade, and requires little watering.

Basic pothos care is very easy. These plants enjoy a wide range of environments. They do well in bright indirect light as well as low light and can be grown in dry soil or in vases of water. They will thrive in nutrient rich soil, but do almost as well in nutrient poor soil. Pothos plants make a great addition to you bathroom or office because they can tolerate low light. While pothos likes a wide variety of light conditions, they do not do well in direct sunlight. Pothos is very popular due to the fact that it can be grown in water or in dry soil. Cuttings can be taken from a mother plant and rooted in water and kept in water as a houseplant. This is convenient for placing a pothos plant in hard to reach areas in a jug of water where they can remain untouched as long as water remains in the jug. On the opposite end, pothos can also be started in soil and will tolerate moderate periods of dry soil with little effect to the plant. Oddly enough, cuttings started in one growing medium have a hard time switching to the other. So, a pothos plant started in soil has a hard time thriving if moved to water and a pothos cutting started in water will not do very well in soil, especially if it has spent a long period of time growing in water. You can fertilize your pothos plant about once every three months and this will help the plant grow more quickly, but most people find that their plants grow quick enough even with being fertilized.

While pothos plants are an easy to care for houseplant, you do need to be aware that they are poisonous. Even the sap from the plant may cause highly sensitive people to break out in a rash. It is considered toxic to cats, dogs and children, but as mentioned, it normally will make them very sick but it isn’t fatal.
