Plant Bio

Olive trees have been cultivated for thousands of years for their fruit and the oil made from it. If you love olives or simply love the look of the green-gray foliage, you may dream of growing olive trees too. One reason people are taking to olive trees as houseplants is that caring for olive trees inside is easy. These trees tolerate dry air and dry soil too, making it an easy-care houseplant. And the trees are attractive too. The branches are covered with narrow, gray-green leaves that have furry undersides.

Light: Full sun. Growing olive trees need as much direct sunlight as possible year-round. Give the plant a quarter turn every week in front of the window to ensure even growth. Moving your plant to a sun-drenched porch or patio for the summer will give it a boost.

Water: Growing olive trees are thirsty spring through fall. Water thoroughly, then allow top 2 in (5 cm) of soil to dry out between waterings. Don’t allow the soil to get soggy which can quickly kill this tree. Reduce water in winter, when plant is resting.

Soil: Sandy, fast-draining mix, such as a cactus potting mix.

Fertilizer: Feed every 2 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted by half.

Plant Bio

People have been growing aloe vera plants (Aloe barbadensis) for literally thousands of years. It is one of the most widely used medicinal plants on the planet.

The first step in aloe vera plant care is to realize that this plant is a succulent. Like cacti, succulents do best in dry conditions. Use a cactus potting soil mix or a regular potting soil with additional perlite or building sand. Also, make sure that the pot has plenty of drainage holes. Aloe vera plants cannot tolerate standing water. The soil of the aloe vera plant should be allowed to go completely dry before being watered. Aloe vera is a sun-loving plant. Plant Bio

The yucca most commonly available as an indoor plant in New Zealand is the Yucca Elephantipes. Known variously as the Spineless Yucca, Spanish Dagger, Adam’s Needle, Spanish Bayonet and Soapweed yuccas are hardy perennials. They have thick woody stems that bear, at their upper ends, clusters of long, dark-green, spear-shaped leaves. During late spring and summer, yuccas may produce dramatic clusters of white, bell-shaped flowers. So striking are these flowers that early settlers of the south-western United States called them “Lamparas de Dios” or “Lanterns of God”. Pollination and proper yucca care are necessary for the formation of these flowers on indoor plants.

The Yucca plant – care for this versatile indoor and outdoor plant is flexible, easy care, easy to maintain – and being considered one of the top air cleaning indoor plants is just another benefit.

Yucca thrives in full sunlight, so they’re perfect for that west-facing window where everything else burns up. They also do well in bright, indirect sun. Growing yucca in low light will lead to fewer flowers and thinner growth for the plant. Yuccas do not need high quality soil, but it needs to be well-draining. However, it still needs to be heavy enough to hold the plant upright. Yucca plant soil should also retain water well. Try a 3:1 mixture of sand and peat in your container. Yucca is highly sensitive to water-logging. Water regularly in the spring and summer growing season, but make sure the plant has excellent drainage and dries between waterings. Water sporadically in the winter. Never let a yucca plant sit in a tray of water.Fertilize during the growing season with liquid fertilizer or controlled-release fertilizer according to label instructions.

Gardenia Indoor (Gardenia Jasminoides)

Plant Bio

While there are many indoor plants that require little attention, gardenia houseplants are not this type. One of the most frustrating things about these lovely and fragrant plants is how finicky they are. If you plan on giving a gardenia plant to someone for a gift, be sure that they know how to care for it or they will be terribly disappointed.

Once you have found a good place for your gardenia indoors, your next challenge is moderating the humidity. This is especially challenging during the winter when the indoor heat kicks in. The drying nature of most heat can cause a once beautiful gardenia to fall to pieces, literally. There are a few ways to increase indoor humidity. The first is to group houseplants close together, the second is to spray a light mist of water on foliage during the early morning hours, and the third is to run a humidifier.

Keep your plant free of drafts and never place a gardenia where it will receive the direct force of hot air from a furnace. Provide water when the soil is dry to touch and add fertilizer or acid-loving plants during the growing season. Remove woody stems to encourage prolific blooming.

Snake Plant Indoor Holland (Sansevieria trifasciata)

Plant Bio

Sansevieria is known for its air-purifying properties and is extremely popular because of its easy care and clean look. Sansevieria has the ability to produce oxygen and even has one of the highest conversion rates with regard to the conversion of carbon dioxide into oxygen. They tolerate low light conditions as well as artificial light, therefore they are very suitable for most homes, apartments, and offices. Sansevierias (snake plants) are some of the toughest plants you can find. Whether indoors, in your garden or on your balcony, these spiky beauties can put up with almost anything. They’re easy as can be, but there are a few things you should know.

Easy does it with the watering. You want to be careful not to overdo it because your plant will rot out. Always make sure the soil is almost completely dry before thoroughly watering again. Water your Snake Plants every 2-6 weeks, depending on your home’s temperature, light levels, and humidity. So, if you travel or tend to ignore plants, this is the one for you.

Even though Sansevierias prefer medium light , they’ll also tolerate low light and high light. How versatile they are! Just be sure to keep them out of the direct sun because they’ll burn in a heartbeat.

These plants don’t mind the dry or stale air in our homes and offices. They’ll also do well in bathrooms where the humidity tends to be much higher. This is another versatility factor which gives this houseplant the label: “diehard”.

Song of jamaica Indoor (Dracaena Reflexa)

Plant Bio

Dracaena reflexa, commonly called Pleomele or Song of India, is a species of Dracaena which is a tropical tree native to Madagascar, Mauritius, and other nearby islands of the Indian Ocean. It is widely grown as an ornamental plant and houseplant, valued for its richly coloured, evergreen leaves, and thick, irregular stems. Indoors, as a houseplant, you can keep this variety much smaller, and, in fact, they generally only grow to about three feet (one meter) tall in containers. Song of India plants are described as variegated because the leaves are multicolored with bright green centers and yellow margins. The colors fade to lighter green and cream as individual leaves age. The leaves are lance-shaped and grow spirally around branches, up to one foot long.

Notoriously difficult to kill, dracaena will look best and be healthiest if you provide it with the right conditions and minimal care. These plants need indirect light and warm temperatures. They prefer humidity, so you can set the container on top of a dish of rocks in water, or you can mist your plant regularly. Make sure the pot drains well and keep the soil moist but not wet. Provide a balanced fertilizer once or twice a year. As with all dracaena varieties, the pretty leaves of Song of India will turn yellow as they age. As the bottom leaves on the plant yellow, simply trim them off to keep the plant looking neat and tidy. You can also trim and shape as needed, and you may find that the plant need staking for support as it grows taller.
